Dog River Watershed Derelict Vessel Removal     Tuesday, April 22, 2014

  • A visibly prominent boat inscribed with the words “Feed the Hungry,” along with four other boats/boat parts, will be removed from Dog River. Members of the media are invited to witness this event and interview participating partners.
  • The Dauphin Island Sea Lab, working with the Dog River Clearwater Revival community organization, was awarded a grant from NOAA’s Marine Debris Program to work on the problem of derelict vessels. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is also funding part of the effort. The derelict boats are the result of hurricanes, owner neglect and abandonment, or death of an owner. In some cases, individuals purposefully leave their old boats in the river, marsh, or tied up to private property making them a problem for someone else. The State of Alabama does not have a dedicated funding mechanism to address the problem.  A US Army Corps of Engineers Permit was required. The project involves: research, removal, restoration, and outreach.

  • Come let your voice be heard for a clean and healthy waterway for today and future generations. Our Annual Meeting will focus on updating you about all our work, what the 2014 year has in store and our Board of Elections will be held.
  • Our Keynote speaker this year is Roberta Swann, director of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP).  Roberta and her team are committed to promoting the wise stewardship of Alabama’s estuaries. Roberta will discuss the value of managing our coastal resources at the watershed scale, touching on our area’s growth since 1974.  She will highlight some of the unintended consequences of that growth and the challenges we face today as we work to restore what we value most about living on the Alabama coast.  Her presentation will include a brief explanation of the MS4 program and what is expected of those entities that hold permits under this program.
  • The MBNEP  has tirelessly worked to promote conservation based on science, education based on citizen involvement and helped developed solid partnerships between grassroots movements like DRCR.  Most recently, MBNEP funded the establishment of  the Coastal Area Stormwater Team (CAST), of which DRCR is a member, and the creation of www.CleanWaterFuture.com .  MBNEP will update us on the status of the Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan for the next five years and how it will benefit us in the Dog River watershed.
